2004 Stand Up For Skateparks

Tony Hawk's inaugural charity event to help build skateparks in low-income communities a huge success

Studio City, CA (October 3, 2004) - Tony Hawk and event co-chairs Sean Penn, David Spade, Bobby Kotick (CEO, Activision), Bob McKnight (CEO, Quiksilver), Casey Wasserman (CEO, Wasserman Media Group) John Lewicki (Sports Marketing Director, McDonalds), and the William Morris Agency hosted the first Stand Up For Skateparks benefit in Studio City, CA, on October 3, 2004. The inaugural event raised $500,000 for the Tony Hawk Foundation, Hawk's non-profit organization whose goal is to help low-income communities build quality skateparks.

Stand Up For Skateparks was held at PINZ! Bowling Center in Studio City, CA, and included family-friendly events such as a vert demonstration with pro skateboarders Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Andy Macdonald, Shaun White and Lincoln Ueda, and bike legend Mat Hoffman. Comedians Todd Glass and David Spade followed a live auction, with an intimate performance by pop/punk superstars Blink 182 finishing the event. Several other attractions, including games, arts and crafts, and a silent auction filled out the afternoon.

Celebrities such as Pamela Anderson, Benicio Del Toro, Trent Reznor, Leeza Gibbons, Tom Green, Marlee Matlin, Lacey Chabert, Cindy Margolis, Josh Todd, Patrick Fugit, Jim Rome, Kenny G, as well as athletes Danny Way, Ryan Sheckler, Rodney Mullen, Christian Hosoi and others attended the event and took part in the live auction benefiting the foundation.

"My plan is to make the Stand Up For Skateparks an annual event to raise money and awareness for the Foundation, so that we can continue to help create these skateparks where skateboarders can practice, socialize, build confidence, and just be kids," says Hawk. "We focus on low-income communities where skateboarders do not yet have a public skatepark."

Currently, there are over 12 million skateboarders and only about 1,000 skateparks nationally.

The Tony Hawk Foundation seeks to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on helping children. Through grants and other charitable donations, the Foundation supports programs focusing on the creation of high-quality public skateparks across the country, giving kids a safe place to socialize and skate.

Since its inception in 2002, the Foundation has given away over $1-million to more than 250 communities throughout the United States.
